With three weeks left until the Mexican presidential election, a coalition of immigrants in Los Angeles, are carrying out several efforts to promote the vote in support of Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador. These activities include information brigades, public displays of support and the use of telephones to call their relatives to remind them of the importance of exercising their right to vote.

Members of the Binational Front of Indigenous Organizations (FIOB) and the National Regeneration Movement (MORENA) in Los Angeles, are asking Mexican migrants to participate in various activities this weekend.

FIOB members will hold a press conference on Wednesday, June 6, to announce that the organization will have telephones available for people to make free calls from their office to family and friends to remind them of the importance of voting in favor of the New National Project. They will also visit places where the Oaxacan community is concentrated to provide wireless telephone service. Telephone directories will be used to contact people in Mexico and remind them of the importance of participating in the upcoming elections.

For several weeks, MORENA-Los Angeles has formed brigades of information at La Placita Olvera. On Saturday June 9, they have scheduled the “March for Hope” to be held at MacArthur Park starting at 1:00 pm.

Both groups are organizing caravans of voters who have the possibility of crossing the U.S._Mexico border back and forth, to go to the special voting polls that will be placed in Mexican border towns.

The coalition holds weekly teleconferences with Héctor Vasconcelos, the liaison between Lopez Obrador and migrants. In the last conference, Vasconcelos stated that the U.S.-Mexico relationship and migration are two issues that presidential candidates will address in the next debate. In addition, he announced that migrants will have the opportunity to make direct demands to López Obrador through a teleconference soon to be scheduled.
